The Secret to Eliminating Acne and Decreasing Skin Sensitivity: Part 1

You want the secret to eliminating acne and decreasing skin sensitivity? The answer: it’s all about how you treat your moisture barrier. Today I’m starting a series all about the moisture barrier and what we can do to improve it, in turn, helping to eliminate acne and decrease sensitivity.

    What is the moisture barrier?

The outer most layer of the skin is the protective layer, also known as the moisture barrier. It is made up of cells which are continuously shed and replaced and acts as a waterproof barrier that keeps water in the skin. It also keeps bacteria, irritants, and allergens from penetrating the skin.

When our moisture barrier is damaged we are susceptible to dryness, redness, flakiness, irritation, stinging, redness, and acne. A damaged moisture barrier may also over produce oil to try to repair itself. The moisture barrier can be damaged by over exfoliating, over cleansing, getting sunburned, or using skincare products with a pH that is too high.

    Why is the ph important?

Our moisture barrier has an acidic pH which ranges from 4.0-6.0. This low ph stops the growth of harmful bacteria and keeps our moisture barrier strong. When we use products with a high pH we are disrupting that. When we compromise our moisture barrier our skin becomes prone to infection, acne, roughness, flaking, irritation, and dehydration.

The biggest culprit that compromises our low ph and disrupts our moisture barrier? A high pH cleanser! Our skin will feel it’s best when we use a cleaner with a pH of 6.0 or less. Hate to break it to you, but most rich, lathery, foamy facial cleansers have a pH of 8.0 or higher. I personally damaged my moisture barrier with overuse of a facial cleansing brush and have also caused harm by using too many new, strong acids in the same week. I have also heard a lot about people using baking soda as a facial scrub which makes me cringe. All of these examples are ways that you could be opening your skin up for some nasty infections.

My Picks for Low pH Cleansers

Hopefully you are still awake after reading all of that because now we are on to the good stuff. I think it’s important to understand why someone is recommending a product for you rather than it just being something they liked. So – here are 6 facial cleansers that I have personally used and love. I hope this helps you find one you like!

    Fade to Fall

Last week we got a ton of rain and then it felt like fall! After a hot, humid, steamy summer I am ready for the cooler weather. This weekend was absolutely perfect. The high was below 70 degrees and we had blue, sunny skies.

Fall weather means getting to pull out some fall outfits! I’ve bee dying to wear this suede skirt and it was the perfect weather for it. I love pairing it with over the knee boots so you don’t have to wear tights.

Excited that I’m feeling good and ready to get back to my regular posting schedule this week! Have a great one!

    So Long Sweet Summer

summer outfit swimsuit bikini coverup ted baker ruffle milwaukee seven bridges

Can you believe August is over, Labor Day has passed, and it is September 5th? I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday weekend! I got to kick off the weekend at Seven Bridges Park in Milwaukee for this amazing shoot with Amanda Vick.

Amanda put it out there that she would love to do a styled shoot that involved splashing around in the waves in a pretty dress. I immediately messaged her and said I had the perfect outfit! We scheduled this shoot right away so we could get it in before it gets too cold. The weather turned out to be perfect!

I had never been to Seven Bridges Park before and it was absolutely gorgeous. I would love to go back there and hike the trail when the leaves change.

On to the important things – this swimsuit and coverup. Isn’t this the prettiest set you’ve ever seen? I love the colors and the ruffles. It’s almost pretty enough to wear off the beach!

My Picks From the Sephora Sale

    sephorapics.jpg

Happy Memorial Day everyone! We have had a great weekend and I am enjoying one last day off before going back to work tomorrow. I wanted to hop on and share what I got from the Sephora Beauty Insider Event since today is the last day.

T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand Never in my life did I think I would spend this much on a curling iron but it is so good and totally worth it! I love that you can change up your look by changing up the barrel. It heats up fast, it cools down fast, and my curls have been holding much better! Highly recommend!

AQUIS Lisse Luxe Hair Turban I’ve been using a tee shirt on my wet hair for years but I recently heard about this hair turban. It cuts drying time in half and controls frizz and breakage. Win, win, win!

Boscia Charcoal Makeup Melter Cleansing Balm I’ve been trying to find a more cost effective alternative to my Omorovicza charcoal balm so decided to try this one. I don’t like the texture as much as the Omorovicza but it definitely takes all my makeup off and leaves my pores looking clean.

Anastasia Stick Foundation I threw this in my cart on a whim after watching someone use it in a tutorial. It’s a semi-matte foundation in a stick form. It goes on quickly and smoothly and then I buff it in with a brush. I like the build-able coverage and the fact that I don’t need to use powder with it!

Becca Pressed Highlighter Mini in Champagne Pop I’m way late to the game on this highlighter. I’ve only heard good things about this so I decided to try a mini. It’s super glowy and pretty!

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Mini I’ve been hearing lots of good things about this and especially since we take a lot of photos and videos after work I would like my makeup to stay intact. So far so good! I got the mini version to try it out for now.

Enjoy your Labor Day! I’ll be back with some great content this week so stay tuned!

Life Update and Pics From the Weekend

Hi everyone – posting a little late this week. I don’t have a lot of time to post this week so I thought I would just pop on and do a life update! August has been a crazy month and in some ways I feel like it’s dragging, but on the other hand I can’t believe it’s almost September! I’ve been feeling torn between wanting summer to stay and being ready for fall. Now that it’s almost Labor Day I’ve decided to soak up this last weekend of summer and then jump head first into fall. I can’t wait for chilly mornings and changing leaves. I’m ready!

Anyway, on to life updates. Starting with my health. I have been sick since the 4th of July. Like have literally only felt good for a few days before I come down with something else. It started out with what I think was Coxsackie Virus (thanks daycare!). Margot had a mild case of Hand Foot and Mouth but I broke out in ulcers all over my throat. No fever or anything so I just thought it was stress and let it heal. Felt better for a few days and then I came down with a fever, chills, and body aches and more ulcers in my throat. That time I thought it was strep but now I’m not sure. That took over a week to heal and then I was finally feeling better and my throat started to hurt. I thought it was ulcers starting up again but turns out to be a cold. Still recovering from that so I am trying to rest and not do too much in evenings.

Work has been crazy. Just super busy and with a fair amount of stress, which is probably a factor in getting sick. I just feel run down and it’s one thing after another. Trying to hang in there and get through this time, I know it’s going to get better.

Margot is having a rough week. We had an eye doctor appointment Monday morning. She has a bit of a lazy eye so  we wanted to get that checked out. Right now we just have to wait and see if she grows out of it and we have a follow up in six months. When we got to the eye doctor she had her exam and then she had to get dilating drops and wait for 30 minutes. While we waited she was playing with the toys in the play room when another little girl and her mom came in. The little girl started playing with a puzzle that Margot had been playing with earlier. Margot was holding a book and when she saw the little girl playing with the puzzle she threw the book at her head! It didn’t actually hit her but I was horrified and made her apologize. Then she needed a diaper change and kept saying “Poop!” over and over again. Toddlers man! IT’s funny now but I was so embarrassed! After her appointment I dropped her off at daycare. Her best friend just moved up to the next room and when we got to daycare she was asking for him. It was so sad! I just feel so bad for my baby girl and I can tell by her reactions that she is having a rough time. It makes me want to cry!

On a bright note Matt started his new job a few weeks ago and it has been really nice to have him home in the evenings before Margot goes to bed. We always say you need at least three adults to raise kids so it’s nice having at least one extra set of hands.

Last weekend I was able to attend Gals That Brunch. It’s a super cool organization that puts together brunches that anyone can attend. It was really fun to meet some new ladies and enjoy a tasty brunch and mimosas. Sunday it was starting to get dark and stormy so we went for a walk to look at the sky. It was super hot and humid so our pictures weren’t great but we still enjoyed the walk.

That’s all for now! Looking forward to Labor Day weekend and onto fall. I find fall so restful, I really hope life starts to slow down.

    Current Makeup Routine

makeup beauty routine bareminerals urban decay naked it cosmetics bye bye under eye becca corrector benefit ka-brow modelco more brows marc jacobs kink and kisses warmth covergirl clump crusher

I’m using a few different makeup products since my last makeup post so I thought I would do an updated routine. This is my every day makeup unless I’m really pressed for time.

First I correct my under eyes with my Becca under eye corrector and a concealer brush. Then I finish off my under eyes with It Cosmetics Bye Bye under eye concealer and a damp Beauty Blender. Just a dot! A little goes a  long way!

Next I’ve been using BareMinerals original powder foundation with a flawless face brush. I love how quick it is to swirl, tap, and buff!

Next I do my brows. I’ve been using Benefit Ka-Brow with the attached brush to fill in and ModelCo More Brows to add fullness and hold them  in place.

After my brows I do my eyes. I’m still using my Urban Decay Naked Basics palette. First I use Walk of Shame on my lids and then Faint in my crease and finally Crave on my lash lines.

Next I use the BareMinerals bronzer in Warmth on my temples, hollows of my cheeks, and along my jawline to give me a subtle sculpt. Then I use Marc Jacobs blush in Kinks and Kisses on the apples of my cheeks.

Last I use Covergirl Clump Crusher Waterproof mascara on my lower lashes.

That’s it! Pretty quick and easy.

    Strolling Into The Week

gal meets glam collection nordstrom sam edelman straw tote bag milwaukee mom outfit style fashion

Happy Monday! It’s Sunday night as I’m writing this and I’m sipping white wine trying to keep the Sunday Dread at bay. I’m sure some of you out there get that, too. Or have in a past life. Work is fine. Honestly this week and last week were fine. I’m just jaded now, lol. I’m cautious and apprehensive. I’m still passionate about what I do and I’ll keep doing my best and putting one foot in front of the other and hoping for the best. That’s all I can do right now.

On Saturday we went down to see family in Chicago and it was so nice. It was my sister in law’s birthday and we got to see my niece and nephew, aunts, uncles, grandparents. Margot had a blast! I wish we could all get together more. Nothing like a great Saturday spent with family to give you some perspective.

On Sunday we took a walk to the other side of our neighborhood and shot this dress I’ve had for a while. It’s such a good one for now and into fall with the sleeve and light orange and white print. I picked up some hydrangeas at the grocery store to brighten my mood and carried them along with us on the walk.

I have a busy week of work and then a fun event to attend on Saturday that I am really looking forward to. I hope you all had a great weekend and have a wonderful week!

How To Add Acids To Your Skincare Routine and Why You Need Them

,skincare acids chemical exfoliate drunk elephant cosrx paula's choice

Today I want to talk about acids! I know, it sounds scary and like I’m telling you you need to put chemicals all over your face. But, there are tons of benefits to using chemical exfoliants including clearing your pores, preventing acne and wrinkles, and keeping your skin smooth. So much better than the awful face scrubs on drugstore shelves! (Please don’t use a scrub on your face!)

First off – What is a chemical exfoliant? Chemical exfoliators are gentle acids that exfoliate your skin by deep cleaning your pores. They loosen and get rid of all the gunk hiding in your skin. They also help to keep acne away and smooth lines and wrinkles by increasing collagen production.

The three acids I like to use in my skincare routine are AHA, BHA, and Vitamin C. AHA refers to Alpha Hydroxy Acid, BHA is Beta Hydroxy Acid, and Vitamin C typically refers to types of Ascorbic Acids. AHA’s are great for getting rid of acne and clogged pores you see on top of your skin, BHA’s clean deep in the pores to smooth the texture of your skin, and Vitamin C is great for brightening and anti-aging.

The first thing to remember when adding acids to your skincare routine is that they must be at the right PH in order to work. BHA and Vitamin C work best at a PH of 3.5 and below. AHA works at a PH of 4 and below. You want to use them in order of lowest PH to highest. I like to use Vitamin C in my morning routine and BHA and AHA at night. It is also helpful to use a PH adjusting toner to prep the skin and get it to the optimal PH before applying acids.

When starting out adding acids to your skincare routine you need to go slow. Add one acid at a time and give it two weeks to make sure you do not have any adverse reactions before adding another. You don’t want to damage your moisture barrier! Sometimes when I try out a new acid if I notice it is too strong I will layer it over a moisturizing toner or serum for a few days until my skin adjusts. Eventually I build up my tolerance to be able to use a PH adjusting toner before applying my acids so I get the maximum benefits.

    My Favorite Acids

AHA: Mizon AHA 8% Peeling Serum, Drunk Elephant Babyfacial

BHA: Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting BHA, Cosrx 2 in 1 Poreless Power Liquid (more gentle option)

Combo: Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos AHA/BHA

Vitamin C: Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum, Sunday Riley C.E.O.

PH Adjusting Toner: Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner

One note – If you are pregnant you shouldn’t use any BHAs. Also, if you have sensitive skin you should go very slow. Layer your acids over a serum or moisturizer before slapping it on your bare face. Wouldn’t want anyone to damage their skin! We’re all about making our skin better here! 🙂

I hope you found some useful information here! What questions do you have about adding acids to your skincare routine?

    Perfect Black Jumpsuit

black wide leg crop jumpsuit vince camuto nordstrom clare v clutch

It was another great weekend for the Hansen family! Not to sound all sunshine and rainbows, because we definitely have our stresses and worries. But we’ve really been trying to soak up every last bit of summer while we can.

I was in New York for work last week. Matt was home with Margot and he took her to the beach Wednesday morning. Ever since I got home she’s been asking to go to the beach so we took her on Saturday morning. It ended up being the perfect time to go, before it got too hot or crowded. She of course had a blast and it was a wonderfully relaxing way to start off the weekend.

Saturday evening some of friends of ours had people over so we got to catch up and watch the kids run around. It’s really nice to be in the same season of life as some of your friends in that way. Everyone was able to relax knowing someone always had their eyes on the kids and we could have a beer and hang out. Margot had a blast pushing the bubble mower around the yard!

Back to New York for a bit – I wore this jumpsuit last Tuesday and it struck the perfect balance between professionalism and comfort. We went to the Ralph Lauren Polo bar for dinner Tuesday night. I wanted to wear something that could get me through the work day and still look chic for our fancy dinner. I wore it with flat sandals during the day since I am on my feet all day when in New York. So glad I did because it was also over 90 degrees. We had a short break before dinner so I was able to go back to the hotel to drop my work bag and put on my heels. All in all it was a fabulous New York night!

I hope everyone has a great week! I’m putting out my good vibes and determined that it’s going to be good one!

    A Walk In The Park

milwaukee hubbard park beer garden dress straw bag mom life

Another Monday is upon us. Last week was one of the roughest I’ve had in quite a while. I’ve actually had three rough weeks in a row at work which cause me to be worn down and stressed and I ended up coming down with strep throat two Fridays ago. If I’ve never had a moment where it was very clear I needed to slow down and rest, I have now. I had to take care of myself and get to bed early every night so I could take care of everyone else during the day. Such is mom life I suppose. But, the blog did fall to the wayside a bit. It killed me to do it, but it had to be done. Thanks for sticking around. All five of you!

By Friday I was feeling better and spent two nights in a row at out neighborhood beer garden. I love that we live so close to so many great places and we are definitely regulars at this park and beer garden in the summer. Friday night Matt, Margot and I walked down for beers, brats, and pretzels. We didn’t get there early enough for Margot to run around much so when my parents came into town Saturday night we went again. Afterward we took a walk along the river so Margot could run around and we could enjoy the cool breeze. It really filled up my tank to be surrounded by family this weekend.

This week I’m off to NYC for work. It’s always crazy busy when I’m there but I think it will actually be nice to get out of the office. We’re going somewhere super fancy Tuesday night and I have a killer jumpsuit I’m excited to wear! Please pray that I have a better week, I really need it. Love you all!
