    My Sephora Sale Picks

    sephora sale picks

A few times a year Sephora runs a sale exclusively for Beauty Insiders. This is a great time to stock up on items your running low on or try something new! Here are the items in my cart!

Primer – I love a glowy makeup look and I’ve heard such great things about this primer. It helps makeup stay in place and gives a “lit from within” glow. So excited to try this!

Eye Cream – I am literally scraping the bottom of the container on my holy grail daytime eye cream. Time for a new one!

Brow Pencil – How is it possible I haven’t tried this one yet?! It’s on so many “best of lists.” Can’t wait to try!

Dry Shampoo – I’ve heard amazing things about this dry shampoo for a while. I got a mini to try.

Highlighter – My highlighter fell onto my counter and broke so I was in need of a new one. I got the set to try both cream and powder formulas!

Bronzer – Again, I’ve heard amazing things about this bronzer. The brush is also great for contouring!

Lip Liner – I’ve been liking the look of a gloss layered over a lip liner lately so I picked up this neutral pink one.

Now through August 27th you can get 15-20% off your purchase depending on if you are a VIB or VIB Rouge. Let me know in the comments if your shopping the sale and what’s in your cart!

    Skincare for Acne and Breakouts

    skincare for acne and breakouts

One of the skincare topics I get asked about the most is what to do for acne and breakouts. Truthfully – I have a diligent skincare routine that keeps my skin acidic at a low pH to prevent acne and breakouts. But, there is the odd occasion that I will get a breakout and these are the steps I follow.

    STEP 1: REMOVE MAKEUP

Because I have lash extensions I need to use something oil free to remove any eye makeup I wore during the day. I like these Clean and Clear Oil Free cloths to remove eye makeup while being careful around my extensions.

STEP 2: OIL OR BALM CLEANSER

This is the first step of my double cleanse. The purpose of this step is to remove makeup and sunscreen before cleansing my face. I put the oil directly onto my dry face and massage for about a minute to loosen up pore-clogging debris. Sometimes you can actually feel debris coming to the surface and falling out of your pores! For breakouts I like using the Banila Clean It Zero Purity oil balm.

STEP 3: GENTLE, LOW PH CLEANSER

A cleanser with a pH over 6 can strip your moisture barrier and invite breakouts so I always go for a gentle, low pH cleanser. My holy grail cleanser is Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser. It feels so soft and gentle on my face and leaves my skin feeling supple!

    STEP 4: ACID TONER

After rinsing I use an acid toner applied with a cotton round. This helps to prep my face for acids and pH dependent products. This also helps to keep my skin acidic and prevent breakouts. Currently using Pixi Glow Tonic – it’s a glycolic acid toner which makes it an AHA. Safe for pregnancy!

    STEP 5: ALPHA HYDROXY ACID

An AHA serum is perfect for getting rid of anything happening on the surface of the skin (i.e. blemishes and closed comedones). This smooths away the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal even, glowing skin. I’ve been using Mizon 8% AHA peeling serum for years and it’s also pregnancy safe. Wait 20 minutes after you apply so it doesn’t interfere with other products.

    STEP 6: EYE CREAM

Eye cream definitely isn’t necessary for preventing or solving breakouts, but I use on every night and this is the step I would apply it. Lately I’ve been using this Drunk Elephant Firming Eye Serum to keep my eye area hydrated. It really helps to soften any lines!

    STEP 7: MOISTURIZING CREAM

I seal it all in with a moisturizing cream. For acne and breakouts, and any time really, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Cream. It has a bit of AHA in it for a little extra exfoliation over night. I wake up with smooth, hydrated, glowing skin!

    STEP 8: BENZOYL PEROXIDE CREAM

I would do all of the steps above for one night and see how your skin is looking in the morning. If you still have a blemish that is not going away, the next night I would apply a Benzoyl Peroxide cream to the blemish. (BP is not safe for pregnancy since it is a Beta Hydroxy Acid.) My tried and true BP cream is the Clearasil Rapid Rescue Spot Treatment. It shrinks blemishes within four hours!

STEP 9: LANCE BLEMISH AND COVER WITH HYDROCOLLOID

If you STILL wake up the next morning with a painful blemish, this would be my last resort step. This is for those times you have a deep, painful cyst that will not go away. First, get a blemish kit like this one. You want to use the tool with a pointy end and disinfect it really good with alcohol. Lance the blemish by gently poking a hole in the top of the pore. Be careful not to damage any more of the skin than you have to! Slap on a hydrocolloid bandage over it and it will suck the pus and bacteria out overnight, Gross, I know. But you will have relief in the morning and then you can start to heal.

Hopefully these steps will help you overcome your breakouts and keep you from picking at them at the very least! If you are still struggling with acne and breakouts there may be a hormonal or bacterial reason underlying. In that case I recommend trying out Curology. I know so many people who have had amazing results using Curology’s services!

    My Natural Hospital Birth

    natural hospital birth story

Now that I’m in the third trimester I’m starting to really prepare for this baby! I find it helpful to read positive birth stories so today I’d like to share Margot’s birth story with you. I’m sharing all of the details so fair warning!

    Margot’s Birth Story

On Monday, October 3rd, 2016 I was 39 weeks and 3 days. I woke up at 2:15am with a mild contraction. I had another about 20 minutes later but I just decided to go back to sleep and figured if it was real labor I would wake up. I had a weird dream that I had bloody show and couldn’t find a pad anywhere (lol) and woke up at 4:45am with more contractions. I went to the bathroom and had some light bloody show! Matt’s alarm went off at 5:30am and I told him things might be happening. We decided to work from home for the day just in case this was real labor.

I stayed in bed for another hour and then went downstairs and had breakfast. By this point contractions were 7-8 minutes apart. I showered and got ready for the day, leaning and swaying against the bathroom counter when a contraction would come. By 8:30am contractions were about 5 minutes apart. I came downstairs and called my parents while Matt walked the dogs and showered. We spent the rest of the morning sitting on a ball, relaxing and breathing, and timing contractions and listening to music. I tried taking a bath at one point but that wasn’t doing much for me. By 11am contractions were 3 minutes apart and we called the midwife on call and told them we would be in.

It was a beautiful sunny day and we were in good spirits! I was still managing pretty well. We were laughing and giddy on the way to the hospital. And of course we got stuck behind a garbage truck at some point which luckily we found funny at the time!

We got to the hospital at 12:00pm and went to labor and delivery triage. The midwife and student midwife on call came in to check me. I was 3cm. I was a little disappointed at the time, hoping I would be further along, but looking back I think I would have had a hard time being monitored in the bed if I would’ve been any farther along. I was monitored in triage for about 30 minutes and then we went to our our room and were monitored for another 30 minutes so our nurse could get a baseline.

My midwife had put that we took Bradley classes in my chart and the nurses and midwives were super respectful! They asked for our birth plan and told us since we were a Bradley couple they would stay out of our way unless we needed them. So awesome!

We spent the next hour laboring in our room. I tried rocking on a ball but that started making me nauseous. I leaned over the end of the bed, got on all fours on the bed, put my back to the wall, and tried sitting on the toilet forwards and backwards. Matt ordered a pizza at some point, haha! About 2:30pm I got really nauseous sitting on the toilet and puked into a bucket. At that point I wanted to get into the tub. They had wanted me to wait initially until I was farther along but at this point decided I was in active labor and the tub would be ok. Our nurse went to get the tub ready (our hospital has a dark room with a jacuzzi tub and twinkle lights on the ceiling).

We went to the tub around 3pm. I had to kneel and lay my head against the side while Matt held towels under my head. I started sweating and Matt put cold washcloths on my neck and forehead. I had to start vocalizing through contractions and kept my voice low so I wouldn’t tense up. After about an hour I was done with the tub and no position was comfortable and I needed a change.

We got back to our room around 4pm and I got checked again – 7cm. I was waiting for transition to hit me at this point! I mostly labored on the bed on hands and knees and had the back of the bed put up so I could lean against it. I was still sweating like crazy and Matt was using cold wash cloths on my neck and back and giving me water and juice between contractions.

At 5pm our nurse said, “My shift is over at 7:30 so if you could have your baby by then that would be great!” I said, “I would love to!” and she left the room. The next contraction I felt like it would feel good to push and then I felt and heard a pop! I said, “What was that?! Oh! My water broke?” Matt said it was just more blood (I was having lots of bloody show throughout). Then I felt the water start to leak out and said, “No, I think my water broke” and Matt looked and then went to get our nurse. Our nurse came in and saw me grunting through the next contraction and called the midwives. They came in and checked me and I was at 10cm! I was still on my knees facing the back of the bed and started pushing through each contraction. They had me spread my knees apart further so I was in a squat/kneel kind of position. Margot was born at 5:39pm!

Margot was placed on my chest right after she came out. The midwives waited until the umbilical cord stopped pulsing and then Matt cut the cord. She started to nurse pretty soon after. She also peed on me right away! We got a little over an hour of skin to skin time and they did all of her checks while she was on my chest. Then Matt did skin to skin for about 30 minutes and then they weighed and measured her.

I needed a few stitches for a few small tears and had to get an IV of pitocin because my uterus wasn’t contracting enough to slow the blood flow. One thing we did not do a good job of was going to the bathroom enough! They had to drain my bladder with a catheter so they could knead my uterus when they were trying to slow the blood. Other than that the things we were surprised by were having a baby before her due date, and I did not have a clear transition. I had sweating and got the shakes a bit when I was going from 7cm to 10cm but did not have the emotional signposts of transition.

Overall we were both so happy with our birth and so proud of how we worked together to bring Margot into the world!

3 Steps to Bright, Hydrated Under Eyes

3 steps to bright hydrated under eyes

The third trimester insomnia has settled in and it’s definitely showing under my eyes. I’ve talked about these products before and this combination is still working wonders! I thought today I would share the three products that help me cover dark circles, reduce puffiness, and get bright, hydrated under eyes.

    Olehenriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream

Step 1 – Olehenriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream I apply this with my wring finger after cleansing and moisturizing but before any makeup. Pat it in and give it a little time to sink in. It’s rich and creamy and definitely adds a little brightness!

    Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector

    Concealer Brush

Step 2 – Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector applied with brush I use a brush to apply the Becca Corrector after my eye cream has settled in a bit. I have found that using a brush to tap the product in helps it blend well with my concealer. When I used my finger it just got really streaky. I use the light/medium shade.

It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer

    Beauty Blender

Step 3 – It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer applied with Beauty Blender I get my beauty blender wet with warm water and then squeeze it out in a towel so it’s damp. Then I put a dot of the Bye Bye Under Eye on the end and pat in a triangle under my eye. Literally just a tiny little dot – this stuff is full coverage and thick! I use the shade light to help with brightening.

One last tip – You see a lot of people using brightening powders under their eyes to set their makeup. I have found that this causes my makeup to settle into every little line and make me look 1,000 years old. No one wants that. Just a little tip.

That’s it! I spent so much time trying to find the right combination of products and this is what is working for me. I did the hard work so you don’t have to! If you try this method and you have any questions or comments leave me a note below!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Kids and Baby Picks

To be honest, there wasn’t a huge amount of options this year for baby and kids. However, I found a few really great deals. There’s a few North Face and Patagonia options that are good deals as well, and this is a great time to buy these items on sale as they rarely get marked down until after/later during the cold season.

    Gear

I have heard great things about these convertible car seats – how easy they are to install and adjust and that they don’t take up a ton of room in your car. Also this stroller and infant car seat have great reviews. I love that the stroller ahas a large basket for storage and has so many seat configurations. I always love an infant seat that goes with the stroller to make it a travel system and this seat is also lightweight which is a must!

    Items for Baby

Some super cute baby items in the sale – like the Little Giraffe Blanket! Margot had one and still loves to cuddle and nap with it. Buntings always come in handy during our Wisconsin winter. I love this bath set from Noodle & Boo – it has everything you need! And although I don’t need a ton of stuff for baby number 2, I think she should have a new outfit and a new towel set!

    Items for Big Sister

This sale is a great time to start looking for fall clothes for the littles. Margot will need a new puffer jacket for winter and I love this pink plaid one! She actually asks to wear jeans sometimes to match mom so maybe we’ll try these. Also loving a few cute sweaters. We love Converse shoes for her, but have also had a pair of See Kai Run shoes and they are awesome! I love these little high tops!

    My Self Tanning Guide

    self tanning guide

Although I tend to embrace the pale all winter long, I actually have a bit of an olive undertone and can get pretty dark if I’m in the sun a lot. You know I’m all about SPF so I try not to get too much sun, but I still love to have a tan. Doesn’t everybody just feel like they look better with a tan? Since I now try to stay out of the sun I’m all about self tanner. These are the products that I have found that really work:

    Sunless Tanner

Of course number one is a good sunless tanner. I have found this mousse from Bondi Sands is the closest thing to a spray tan. I use the ultra dark color. It has more of an olive tone to it so it’s not orangey. It looks a little crazy when you first put it on but it gives me a nice even color and looks really natural!

    Face Tanner

You already know I have a love for Drunk Elephant and these new Bronzi Drops are a great addition! You just mix a drop of this bronzing serum with your moisturizer to give your face a little glow. You can build up the color based on the ratio of bronzer to moisturizer you use and the serum is full of antioxidants that fight against fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and dullness. Win-win!

    Bronzer

When I just want to add a little glow to the high points of my face I reach for my favorite bronzer – Bareminerals Warmth. It’s an oldie but goodie and seriously the best bronzer there is!

    Body Bronzer

When I don’t have time for self tanner or want to help make my self tanner last longer I use this Vita Liberata Body Blur. It’s moisturizing and gives some temporary color and shimmer. Like summer in a bottle!

    My Current Self Tanning Routine

    • The day before I apply my self tanner, I exfoliate my body and shave. I have been LOVING this Josie Maran Argan Sugar Balm Body Scrub. It smells and feels AMAZING on your skin and definitely gets the exfoliating job done! You want to remove all dead skin cells and/or any old self tanner you have left on your skin before applying new self tanner.
    • After exfoliating and shaving, I apply my favorite body oil so my skin is clean, prepped, and nice and moisturized! Hydrated skin will hold onto the self tanner longer than dry skin.
    • The next day, I apply my self tanner! (You shouldn’t apply lotion on the same day you’re applying self tanner, so the day you apply self tanner, don’t put lotion on beforehand). I bought this applicator mitt to apply the self tanner with and LOVE it. It makes the self tanner go on so smooth without any streaks.
    • Let it dry for about 2 minutes before getting dressed.
    • Done!

    Nighttime Skincare for Pregnancy

    nighttime skincare for pregnancy

Today I’ll be dishing the details on my current evening skincare routine. Honestly this routine is great for anyone, but all of these products are also pregnancy safe. This routine is great for keeping skin clear and hydrated. I love waking up with clear, glowing skin!

    STEP 1: EYE MAKEUP REMOVER

Because I have lash extensions I need to use something oil free to remove any eye makeup I wore during the day. I like these Clean and Clear Oil Free cloths to remove eye makeup while being careful around my extensions.

STEP 2: OIL OR BALM CLEANSER

This is the first step of my double cleanse. The purpose of this step is to remove makeup and sunscreen before cleansing my face. Currently I’ve been using the Beautycounter cleansing balm. I love that their products are completely clean and it smells like cucumbers!

Currently using Pixi Glow Tonic – it’s a glycolic acid toner which makes it an AHA. Safe for pregnancy!

    STEP 5: ALPHA HYDROXY ACID

I use an AHA serum nightly, which performs best at a PH under 3.5 so this is when I apply it. This smooths away the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal even, glowing skin. I’ve been using Mizon 8% AHA peeling serum for years and it’s also pregnancy safe. Wait 20 minutes after apply so it doesn’t interfere with other products.

    STEP 6: EYE CREAM

At night I like to use this Beautycounter Countermatch Eye Cream to keep my eye area hydrated. It really helps to soften any lines!

    STEP 7: MOISTURIZING CREAM

I seal it all in with a moisturizing cream. I’ve been using the Drunk Elephant Protini Peptide Cream lately. I love that their products are clean and this moisturizer helps with firmness, hydration, and dullness and uneven texture.

    STEP 8: LIP CARE

I recently discovered the Sara Happ lip products and I’m in love! She really is the lip care expert and her products are formulated with clean ingredients. I like to exfoliate with the Lip Scrub and then seal in moisture with the Dream Slip.No dry, peeling lips here!

And now it’s time for bed! Let me know if you have any questions or try any of these products. I’d love to hear!
